The 35-year-old is accused of killing her “superhero” son Smaller on his 10th birthday and her four-year-old “princess” daughter Lilly.

Neighbours of the mum-of-two have said she is devastated by the tragedy, and added that she will “never get over” her loss.

McCann has been remanded in custody over the incident which took place at around 11.10pm on Monday.

One heartbroken neighbour told The Sun: “She’ll struggle to cope without her kids. They were her world. She lived for them.

‘THEY WERE HER WORLD’

“It’s the worst thing ever to happen. We can’t believe they’ve gone.

“Mary’s lost her two beautiful children and now she faces going to prison for causing their deaths.

“We don’t know what happened but it’s shocked everyone. It’s horrible. We can’t stop crying. She was a good mum, she’ll never get over it.”

The tragedy struck just hours after Smaller had celebrated his 10th birthday with his family and they were returning home to Derby.

Heartbroken family and friends gathered yesterday to release pink and blue balloons for the much-loved siblings.

McCann, who was driving, was taken to hospital suffering from shock with her third child who was a passenger with her siblings. The pair were later discharged and the mum was arrested.

The driver of the HGV was uninjured in the crash which closed the busy motorway for 12 hours.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “A woman has been charged following a road traffic collision in which two children died on the M1, near Milton Keynes.

“Mary McCann, aged 35, of Bamford Avenue, Derby, has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

“McCann has been remanded in custody to appear at Crown Court on 6 September.”
