FURIOUS Good Morning Britain viewers are demanding Richard Madeley is removed from the programme for taking a swipe at Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance.
The broadcaster referred to the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Adviser as ‘The Chuckle Brothers’.
Discussing the Partygate scandal inside Number 10, he said: “How was it possible at a time when almost every evening at 5 o’clock you’d have what are loosely called the Chuckle Brothers giving us bad news, and Boris Johnson usually standing between them waving his finger and telling us all to behave, and then a couple of hours later there was a major booze up at Number 10. How did that culture develop?”
The pair head up the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies [SAGE] and regularly briefed the nation, alongside Prime Minister Boris Johnson, on coronavirus case levels and the changes in guidelines to try and help curb the spread.
Some viewers were riled that Richard likened them to hapless duo Barry and Paul Chuckle from children’s comedy show Chucklevision.
One wrote on Twitter: “Absolutely disgraceful @GMB that @richardm56 still refers to top scientist’s as the “Chuckle Brothers” #madeleyout.”
Another posted: “Did Richard Madeley just refer to Chris Whitty & Patrick Vallance as The Chuckle Brothers? Unbelievable.”
A third said: “Richard Madeley calls the scientific and medical experts during the Covid briefings the ‘Chuckle Brothers’. How disrespectful!.”
Sage was finally stood down over coronavirus in March after cases significantly dropped off.
Gloucester-born Prof Whitty, an expert in infectious diseases, is also a practising NHS consultant physician at University College London Hospitals and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
He was appointed Chief Medical Officer in October 2019, just six months before coronavirus hit Britain.
Ministers revealed he regularly put in long hours at his desk, sometimes seven days a week, to protect the nation.
A senior source said: “Chris may often put on a dour face but that is exactly what was required during the dark days of lockdown.
“Chris has been calm and unflappable throughout and is a trusted source of wisdom and knowledge. He thoroughly deserves his honour.”
